HPLBC Code of Conduct

Lawn bowls is not just a fun and engaging sport; it also promotes good exercise, sportsmanship, and respect for others. To ensure an enjoyable experience for all players, we follow a Code of Conduct that emphasizes good behavior, common sense, and consideration for fellow participants.

General Etiquette

  • Always act respectfully. Avoid raising your voice or criticizing teammates or competitors. If you want to offer advice, make sure the player is open to hearing it and do so privately and in a encouraging manner.

  • Greet teammates and opponents before the game starts. After the game, congratulate everyone regardless of the outcome. Winning is not an chance to gloat, nor is losing an excuse to sulk.

Dress Code

  • Wear flat-soled footwear to protect the green.

  • For all recreational non-tournament play, you can wear whatever is most comfortable, but use your best judgement to avoid wearing anything that may be considered overtly political or offensive.

  • For inter-club play, wear a white or yellow HPLBC shirt, if possible.

Behavior on the Rink

  • Avoid loud talking or unnecessary movement when another player is on the mat.

  • After bowling, step off to the right to allow the next bowler to proceed.

  • When it's not your turn, stand well behind the mat at the mat end of the rink.

  • At the head end of the rink, stand well behind the jack without casting shadows on it. Leads in triples matches should avoid being on the green during this time.

Movement During Play

  • Walk down the center of your own rink to avoid interfering with adjacent games.

  • Use hand signals to center the jack instead of shouting across the rink.

  • Do not walk to the other side while teammates or opponents are still bowling.

Focus on Gameplay

  • Save socializing for before or after the game to maintain focus during play.

  • If you plan to make a drive shot, announce it to players at the head so they can move safely behind.

Rules & Sportsmanship

  • Take responsibility for learning and following the rules of lawn bowls.

  • Always prioritize fairness and respect in every aspect of your game.

By adhering to this Code of Conduct, we can ensure that lawn bowls remains a positive experience for everyone.
